SUMMARY:How to Engage Donors using Community-Centered Practices
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Frank Velásquez Jr. \nMay 12\, 2023\, 8:30 – 10:00 AM \nNEW LOCATION: YWCA Southern Arizona \n525 N Bonita Ave \n8:30 – 9:00 AM Networking \n9:00 – 10:00 AM Program \n$25 Members\, $35 Non-members\, $15 Zoom \nA continental breakfast will be served \nSession Description \nFundraising models should respect donors and build strong relationships with them.  And they must also be centered on the communities who know firsthand what is needed for meaningful change. This session will introduce ways to engage donors differently by fostering a sense of belonging and engaging them in transformative (not transactional) work. Drawing on examples from capital campaigns to grant writing\, Frank Velásquez Jr. will demonstrate how subtle shifts in language will create powerful connections between your organization\, your donors\, and your community. \nAbout the Presenter \nA racial justice and gender equity advocate\, Frank Velásquez Jr. leads and collaborates with passion\, authenticity and an open mind. He connects to the stories that make each of us who we are and the stories that inextricably connect us to each other. His passion is to bring local\, regional\, and national attention to the inequities that communities of color face\, so that they can then achieve equitable economic advancement and build generational wealth. \n  \n

A longtime annual IDEA Champion designation recipient\, our chapter continues to deepen our commitment to IDEA as our driving force and is eager to share our approach with other chapters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Using Asset-Based Language to Reclaim BIPOC Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this meeting will be held in person at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona at our old morning time. See below for details & COVID precautions.\nSingle narratives often create stereotypes which are deficit-framed\, incomplete and harmful. The use of asset-based language in fundraising emphasizes the strengths\, aspirations\, and contributions of communities of color. By honoring the work of people of color rather than portraying them as recipients of charity\, they themselves can lead systemic change efforts in their communities.  \n  \nFrank Velásquez Jr. (he/his)\nA racial and gender equity advocate\, Frank Velásquez Jr. leads and collaborates with passion\, authenticity and an open mind. He connects to the stories that make each of us who we are and the stories that inextricably connect us to each other. His career has included stops in the private sector such as Walt Disney World and MGM Grand Resort & Casino Las Vegas\, as well as higher education (Pima Community College)\, the not-for-profit sector (JobPath\, Boys to Men Tucson)\, and consulting/contracting (YWCA of Southern Arizona\, Sunnyside Foundation and Sol Casinos). Frank’s passion is to bring local\, regional\, and national attention to the inequities that people of color face\, and does this currently through his workforce and community development work in Southern Arizona. His favorite project was the creation and soon-to-be-launched Women’s Economic Advancement Center at YWCA of Southern Arizona\, a self-sufficiency center designed to meet women where they are and provide them holistic support so that they can achieve economic stability. He currently works as the Director of Workforce Initiatives at the Tucson Metro Chamber of Commerce. \nIn his free time\, Frank loves to play basketball\, travel the globe\, hike\, and watch a good movie/show/play with his partner in crime. \nCOVID Precautions: \nAccording to current Pima County Health Department and CDC guidelines\, AFP is operating in Yellow/Medium category: \n\nMasking is required indoors\nProof of vaccination or a negative test (72 hours) is required at the door\nPlease do not attend if you have recently tested positive for COVID or are showing any potential symptoms

SUMMARY:Connection to Care: How Events Can Bring Community Together
DESCRIPTION:Events often play a significant fundraising role for nonprofits each year. Unfortunately\, events are not the efficient fundraisers they once were (if they ever were). Join our speakers from the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation and Phoenix Pride to learn how they use events to bring community together for a bigger purpose. During their presentation they will share the history of their organizations as well as the grassroots connections that led to highly successful\, well attended\, and deeply loved yearly events that do not focus solely on raising money. \n  \nEva Steele (she/her/hers) Director of Programs – Phoenix PRIDEIn 2015\, five years after beginning her transition Eva\, originally from MI\, decided to move to Phoenix to dive into the Metropolitan Phoenix LGTBQ+ Community and develop her career. In 2017 she won the Miss Phoenix Pride Pageant and later that year was elected to the Board of Directors. In her board service\, she served as the Audit Committee Chair and on the Education and Outreach Committee. In 2018 she made the professional shift leaving Cosmetic Retail and her Board Service to become the Phoenix Pride Program Manager. In 2019 she attended the Arizona Leadership Academy and ASU Lodestar obtaining her Non-Profit Management Certification. \nBecause of her experience in the Corporate Sector and her lived experience as a Bi-Racial trans woman\, Eva created the Phoenix Pride Diversity and Inclusion Training\, presented to local and national corporations agencies and entities to create lasting inclusive workplace policies and settings allowing all employees to truly thrive. Eva also serves the local organization The Imperial Court of Arizona as a volunteer and member and in 2021 Eva was sworn in as Council Member to the Greater Phoenix Ryan White HIV Services Planning Council and was announced as the organization’s first Director of Programs. \n  \nLanden Smith (he/him/his) Development Manager – Phoenix PRIDE\nLanden originally from Toledo\, Ohio has been a resident of Phoenix since 2006. After coming out in 2007 he was able to attend his first pride festival here in Phoenix and has been nearly every year since. With a background in clothing retail management for nearly 15 years\, Landen began working with Phoenix Pride in 2017 after winning the title of Mister Phoenix Pride. Later that year he joined the Phoenix Pride Board of Directors. In his four years on the board\, he served as Audit Committee Chair\, Director at Large\, and later as the President before taking the leap from board service to staff. Additionally\, he is the Co-Director for the Phoenix Pride Pageantry System. Landen also previously served as Emperor XIV and Vice-President of local community non-profit\, the Imperial Court of Arizona. \nOutside of the office you can catch Landen dancing on stages across the valley entertaining as “Kristofer Inez Onyx” and traveling throughout the country whenever he has the opportunity. \n  \nMonique Vallery is the Director of Development at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF). She joined SAAF after serving as the Chief Operations Officer and Creative Director at Fourth Avenue Merchants Association. Monique also serves as Board President for Homicide Survivors\, Inc. Her commitment to Homicide Survivors and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) comes from a very passionate place\, due to a personal loss her family experienced and the kindness they received from the community. She has spent the last 18 years in Tucson developing and supporting both corporate and nonprofit events as well as fundraising. Her strongest value is believing that our community is about building and maintaining relationships. \n

SUMMARY:IDEA Committee's Arizona Boards and Commissions Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The IDEA Committee as part of the AFP Southern Arizona chapter has taken on a new initiative to make Arizona Boards and Commissions much more accessible to people of color. There are currently 220 active boards and commissions and each of them allow for “public members” who can be anyone from the community. By making these seats more accessible to people of color\, we are diversifying the voices in the room where decisions are being made about our communities and issues that we care about. Barry Wong\, the Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Equal Opportunity will be attending the December 1st IDEA Committee meeting to explain this application process and answer any questions. This meeting is open to the public\, you do not need to be an AFP member or fundraiser to attend. We encourage not just people of color to attend\, but allies who want to better understand this process so they can share with people of color who might be interested in these opportunities. You can learn more about Arizona Boards and Commissions on their website. \n  \nTo learn more about the IDEA Committee you can check out the AFP Southern Arizona website or email Valerie Sipp at valerie.sipp@gmail.com. \nDate/Time: Tuesday\, December 1st\, 12:30 – 1:30 PM \nZoom link will be shared via email before the meeting. \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:Soliciting Major Gifts with Excellence
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on October 9th for a presentation from Graham Hoffman\, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona and the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. \nSoliciting Major Gifts with Excellence \nMajor gift solicitation can be one of the most effective ways for a nonprofit to achieve their annual fund goals. If your fundraising efforts do not include a major gift piece\, you are ignoring a critical area. This presentation is designed to enhance your skills and success with major gift solicitations. The workshop will be interactive\, providing hands-on exercises to practice what you learn. We hope it will result in a stronger major gift fundraising campaign\, allowing your agency to spend more time focusing on the important work you do to serve our community. \n \nGraham Hoffman is President and CEO of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. He has worked in the philanthropic sector for over seventeen years and has demonstrated experience in strategic planning\, major gifts fundraising\, endowments\, and planned giving. The Jewish Community Foundation aids the Tucson community in securing legacy commitments\, managing endowments on behalf of local agencies\, stewarding donor advised funds on behalf of local philanthropists\, and offering grants to local organizations looking to advance offerings to the Tucson community. \nPrior to his transition to Tucson in 2018\, Graham was Deputy Director of Development at AIPAC and Deputy Director of AIEF\, where he oversaw major gifts\, endowment\, and grants processes; developed activist engagement and stewardship strategies; and empowered regional development staff to secure new and increased commitments to advance the organization’s strategic growth plan. \nA graduate of Washington University in St. Louis’ Olin Business School\, he began a successful career in consulting at Accenture\, specializing in organizational change management\, operations improvement\, and strategy. Prior to AIPAC\, Graham spent a decade at Hillel International in senior strategy roles\, ultimately as Associate Vice President for Strategy. Graham was responsible for pioneering and advancing Hillel’s engagement & education strategies. \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84952386364 \nMeeting ID: 849 5238\ntap mobile\n+16699009128\,\,84952386364# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,84952386364# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 849 5238 6364 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/keyQV4GqBY \nFriday\, October 9th\, 7:30-9:00 A.M.\nVirtual Networking 7:30-8:00 A.M.\nProgram 8:00-9:00 A.M. \n  \n  \n\n \n \n Monthly Meeting RSVP & Purchase Form\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Monthly Meeting*Please confirm meeting month for which you are RSVPing and submitting payment for.January 2021February 2021March 2021April 2021May 2021June 2021July 2021August 2021September 2021October 2021November 2021December 2021Payment AmountsMembers $25Nonmembers $35Community Supported $0Quantity*Please enter a number greater than or equal to 1.Payment method*For Community Supported events select check as the payment method\n \n \n Online\n \n \n \n Check\n List all attendeesTotal\n $0.00\n \n CAPTCHA

SUMMARY:Working in a post COVID world
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a presentation from E. Liane Hernandez of the YWCA of Southern Arizona and Anna Harper-Guerrero from Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse. \n2020 has shown us the myriad ways that communities and our nation have not prepared to meet significant social challenges around health disparities\, economic inequities\, systemic violence perpetrated against specific populations\, and the systems undergirding these inequities. These times have also shown our sector how nimble we can be together.  Amid a global pandemic and political unrest and profound social reckoning\, organizations have had to pivot programming\, fundraising\, planning\, and operations to meet our staff and communities’ needs in many ways\, including collective action. \nWe will offer some notes from the field from two local organizations on priorities and ways of working in a post COVID world. This session will be a time for reflection and sharing about our roles as nonprofit professionals and community members\, focusing on the importance of leveraging our influence to center equity and systems change in our collective work. \n  \nE. Liane Hernandez is the Director of the Women’s Leadership and Wellness Center (WLWC) of the YWCA Southern Arizona in Tucson\, AZ. In her capacity at the YWCA\, she and her team provide workforce development and empowerment workshops\, events around justice\, sustainability\, feminism and advocacy\, as well co-producing inclusion trainings. \nShe is a convener and works to create space for individuals and organizations to do the work of inclusive community building. Trained as an art historian\, chef and cultural anthropologist she is a student of the questions of what community is\, who gets to participate\, and how. \nA member of the Tucson nonprofit arts community for many years\, she has served as staff as well as on boards\, committees\, grant review panels and was a founder of Raices Taller 222. She currently sits on the Bond Oversight Commission and is a member of the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival as the City of Gastronomy Culture Kitchen Coordinator. Formerly\, Liane was a member of the Tucson Voices Op Ed Project 2016\, and the Latino Graduate Training Seminar on Qualitative Methodology at the Smithsonian Institute. She was recognized as the Adelita Del Año by Las Adelitas PAC in 2015. \nA native of Arizona\, she lives in her beloved city of Tucson\, Arizona with her partner\, Peter\, and their two dogs. \n  \nAnna Harper-Guerrero\, LMSW\, is Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer at Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse in Tucson and is a Faculty Associate at the Arizona State University School of Social Work in Tucson.  Prior to joining the Emerge! team\, Anna was a Special Staff Assistant to Pima County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard Elías.  Prior to her work with Chairman Elías\, Anna served as Volunteer Coordinator and then Crisis Services Director at the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault.  Anna has also worked as a staff member or intern for several other entities\, including with the Pima County Community Services Department\, the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence\, Empact Suicide Prevention Services\, Cholla Magnet High School\, and Aviva Children’s Services.  Her past volunteer work includes co-chairing the Pima County Crime Victim Compensation Board\, serving as a Commissioner with the Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission\, and she is a past board member of Skrappy’s Youth Program. She has been in the field of social work for 18 years and has extensive clinical and program development experience in domestic abuse and sexual assault services. Anna is a graduate of the University of Arizona and Arizona State University and received her licensure from the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners in 2004 and was named Tucson’s 40 Under 40 Woman of the Year in 2009.  \n  \nFriday\, September 11th\, 7:30-9:00 A.M.\nVirtual Networking 7:30-8:00 A.M.\nProgram 8:00-9:00 A.M. \n  \n\n \n \n Monthly Meeting RSVP & Purchase Form\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Monthly Meeting*Please confirm meeting month for which you are RSVPing and submitting payment for.January 2021February 2021March 2021April 2021May 2021June 2021July 2021August 2021September 2021October 2021November 2021December 2021Payment AmountsMembers $25Nonmembers $35Community Supported $0Quantity*Please enter a number greater than or equal to 1.Payment method*For Community Supported events select check as the payment method\n \n \n Online\n \n \n \n Check\n List all attendeesTotal\n $0.00\n \n CAPTCHA

SUMMARY:Excel as a Board Member!
DESCRIPTION:Gather up your board members and join us August 14th to deepen your understanding of how healthy boards help build nonprofit success. Deb Dale\, Chief Development Officer at Arizona Public Media\, will suggest what you should ask before you join a board and how a ‘Culture of Philanthropy’ impacts the success of your organization. We will discuss fundraising and governance best practices and even how to read financials and an IRS 990 form! \nDeb Dale is a Certified Fundraising Executive who\, over the course of her 20+ year career\, has helped raise over $50 million and assisted organizations in distributing millions more. Prior to joining Arizona Public Media as Chief Development Officer\, she was principal of Deb Dale & Associates\, and a founding partner of Smith & Dale LLC\, both Tucson-based fundraising and nonprofit management consulting firms. She has served as Chief Development Officer for The Primavera Foundation\, Corporate and Major Gifts Officer for the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault\, and Chief Executive Officer of Arizona List. \nFriday\, August 14th\, 7:30-9:00 A.M.\nVirtual Networking 7:30-8:00 A.M.\nProgram 8:00-9:00 A.M. \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86542622299?pwd=TWJ0VUlyTEUrN1hxYVFaMmZ2dE1pUT09 \n  \nMeeting ID: 865 4262 2299 \nPasscode: 145096 \nOne tap mobile \n+16699009128\,\,86542622299#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,145096# US (San Jose) \n+12532158782\,\,86542622299#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,145096# US (Tacoma) \n  \nDial by your location \n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York) \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown) \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 865 4262 2299 \nPasscode: 145096 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kbZJN2NTHL \n  \nRegister for this event below. \n  \n\n \n \n Monthly Meeting RSVP & Purchase Form\n \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Monthly Meeting*Please confirm meeting month for which you are RSVPing and submitting payment for.January 2021February 2021March 2021April 2021May 2021June 2021July 2021August 2021September 2021October 2021November 2021December 2021Payment AmountsMembers $25Nonmembers $35Community Supported $0Quantity*Please enter a number greater than or equal to 1.Payment method*For Community Supported events select check as the payment method\n \n \n Online\n \n \n \n Check\n List all attendeesTotal\n $0.00\n \n CAPTCHA
