She was named the Southern Arizona Fundraising Executive of the Year\, has been honored by the University of Arizona’s Eller College and was named one of Tucson’s ’40 Under 40’ Business Leaders. \nPrior to joining AZPM she spent over a decade as a fundraising and nonprofit management consultant with Smith & Dale\, LLC and Deb Dale & Associates. In that role she provided fundraising and executive coaching\, facilitated board retreats\, strategic planning processes\, educational trainings\, and performance audits for countless organizations. She also helped design and implement capital campaigns for more than a dozen organizations. \nDeb has served on numerous committees and boards of directors over the years. Commitments may flounder due to public pushback in the Court of Public Opinion. While this seems to be the dominant narrative\, those committed to the work are still doing the work. In this interactive fundraising workshop\, professionals will explore the current state of IDEA\, engage in discussion on how to integrate values for inclusion without muscling or smuggling it in\, and learn about a systems approach to equity and inclusion in fundraising. \nLearning outcomes \nThis interactive workshop will combine insights\, facilitated discussions\, and better practices. A study\, led by AFP Global\, involving eight other fundraising-related organizations showed an urgent need for IDEA in the workplace. We’ll share industry wide statistics and provide you with the tools you need to Speak Truth to Power in Fundraising. \n  \nAbout the Presenters: \nSarah Martin\, CFRE is a Loyal Donor Officer at The Nature Conservancy where she engages donors in conversations around planned giving. She has a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Arizona and as an undergraduate\, worked as a research assistant in the UA’s Laboratory of Tree Ring Research. Sarah is a certified pastry chef and before she dedicated herself to a career in fundraising\, she spent many years working in professional kitchens. She also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador where she organized a woman-focused micro-banking program. Sarah thinks of herself as a pragmatic optimist\, and manages stress through running trails and savoring delicious homemade confections. \nElise Christmon\, Digital Production Manager\, The Nature Conservancy – After being forged in the fires of the nonprofit art sector at MOCA Tucson\, I accepted a fundraising role at the Sonoran Institute and fell in love with environmental justice\, leading to my current role at The Nature Conservancy. I have served on the board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals\, Southern AZ chapter since 2019\, establishing the BIPOC Nonprofit Workers support group and assisting in the chapter’s groundbreaking IDEA work. \n

This panel session will examine AFP Southern Arizona chapter as a case study in implementing IDEA followed by interactive discussion and participant brainstorm about IDEA in their own organizations. Over the past five years\, though a commitment to focusing fundamentally on IDEA\, our chapter has begun to transform into one where an IDEA lens drives every facet of our chapter’s work. Our successes include the creation of a BIPOC leadership pipeline\, creation of a community-based BIPOC affinity group\, establishing an equitable compensation model for our presentation speakers\, flattening the traditional mentorship hierarchy model\, adopting community-centric fundraising principles\, and more. A longtime annual IDEA Champion designation recipient\, our chapter continues to deepen our commitment to IDEA as our driving force and is eager to share our approach with other chapters. \n\n

SUMMARY:Ethical Considerations When Working With Older Donors

Mark Clark\, CEO\, Pima Council on Aging \nOctober 14th – 7:30-9:00 am  \nLocation : CFSA \nWhile capacity for generosity often increases as donors age\, it is important to be cognizant of ethical considerations when working with this group. This workshop will cover the landscape of aging here in Pima County\, as well as how to identify signs of cognitive decline and exploitation. Fundraisers will be challenged define their ethical duty when working with older adults\, and will strategize how create boundaries in those murky ethical grey areas. \n  \nW. Mark Clark is President & CEO of Pima Council on Aging\, a position he has held since 2014. He has more than forty-five years of executive leadership of behavioral health\, human service\, housing and faith-based organizations. From 2011 to 2013 he served as Associate General Minister of the Cleveland-based United Church of Christ. Prior to this position\, Mark served for twelve years as the President & CEO of CODAC Behavioral Health Services. He is currently the Board President of the Presidio San Agustin Museum and a Trustee of the TUSD Benefits Trust. He has been active in number community and professional organizations including the Old Ft. Lowell Neighborhood Association\, the National Organization of Social Workers and United Way of Southern Arizona. He is honored to have been selected to be Arizona Social Worker of the Year in 2009\, and to have received a Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness and the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.  Mark holds a Masters in Social Work from ASU and an undergraduate degree from NAU. He was a 2002 Fellow of the Center for Social Innovation at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. She received her B.A. from the University of Arizona and law degree from the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law. Edna self identifies as BIPOC/Latinx and she is governed by the tenet that representation is crucial. She brings a unique background of law\, teaching\, political and not for profit fundraising to her career. Edna is with the Arizona Center for Women’s Advancement\, the first think tank by and for Arizona Women\, providing information and advocacy to women working to improve their communities. \nShe serves on the board of the Southern Arizona Chapter of Fundraising Professionals as the CFRE (Certified Fundraising Professional Executive) chair where she conducts a course for the CFRE exam; & previously served on the board as National Philanthropy Day co-chair (2013) and chair (2014). Learn about her acceptance and nonacceptance journey in white-led philanthropy\, and her parallel mixed emotions of her own black culture and LGBTQ+ allies.  \nMesha Davis\nChief Executive Officer\, Arizona Foundation for Women  \nMesha is the CEO of the Arizona Foundation for Women (AFW) where she fights for the safety\, health and economic empowerment of women in Arizona. Mesha is currently chair\, and recently served as vice-chair\, finance and governance chair of Arizona Grantmakers Board of Directors and serves on their public policy committee. She is also a member on Alliance for Arizona Nonprofits Board of Directors and policy council\, and a member of EPWNG.  \nMesha was recently on the cover (including full article) of So Scottsdale Magazine August 2020 issue and as a part of the 100th 19th Amendment\, selected as a Phoenix Herstories by the Celebration Taskforce\, a citizens commission made up of members of The City of Phoenix’s Women’s Commission\, Arts Commission and Community Champions. Also recognized as one of InBusiness Greater Phoenix Magazine’s 2018 Women of Achievement and received many other awards during her nonprofit leadership in Arizona and other states.  \nPrior to AFW\, Mesha was the Chief Development Officer for Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS and led their $10.1 million capital and capacity campaign. The organization celebrated its 25th anniversary during its 20-year largest fundraising gala. Mesha also served as the VP of Development for The Family Partnership in Minneapolis helping transition a board of advisors to fundraisers building a large donor pool.  \nMesha’s nonprofit journey began at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee. Mesha opened the Northside YMCA\, a $16m\, 114\,000sf YMCA\, kindergarten-8th grade charter school and childcare center\, which experienced increased memberships and program revenues. The use of asset-based language in fundraising emphasizes the strengths\, aspirations\, and contributions of communities of color. By honoring the work of people of color rather than portraying them as recipients of charity\, they themselves can lead systemic change efforts in their communities.  \n  \nFrank Velásquez Jr. (he/his)\nA racial and gender equity advocate\, Frank Velásquez Jr. leads and collaborates with passion\, authenticity and an open mind. He connects to the stories that make each of us who we are and the stories that inextricably connect us to each other. His career has included stops in the private sector such as Walt Disney World and MGM Grand Resort & Casino Las Vegas\, as well as higher education (Pima Community College)\, the not-for-profit sector (JobPath\, Boys to Men Tucson)\, and consulting/contracting (YWCA of Southern Arizona\, Sunnyside Foundation and Sol Casinos). Frank’s passion is to bring local\, regional\, and national attention to the inequities that people of color face\, and does this currently through his workforce and community development work in Southern Arizona. His favorite project was the creation and soon-to-be-launched Women’s Economic Advancement Center at YWCA of Southern Arizona\, a self-sufficiency center designed to meet women where they are and provide them holistic support so that they can achieve economic stability. SUMMARY:Connection to Care: How Events Can Bring Community Together
DESCRIPTION:Events often play a significant fundraising role for nonprofits each year. Unfortunately\, events are not the efficient fundraisers they once were (if they ever were). Join our speakers from the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation and Phoenix Pride to learn how they use events to bring community together for a bigger purpose. During their presentation they will share the history of their organizations as well as the grassroots connections that led to highly successful\, well attended\, and deeply loved yearly events that do not focus solely on raising money. \n  \nEva Steele (she/her/hers) Director of Programs – Phoenix PRIDEIn 2015\, five years after beginning her transition Eva\, originally from MI\, decided to move to Phoenix to dive into the Metropolitan Phoenix LGTBQ+ Community and develop her career. In 2017 she won the Miss Phoenix Pride Pageant and later that year was elected to the Board of Directors. In her board service\, she served as the Audit Committee Chair and on the Education and Outreach Committee. In 2018 she made the professional shift leaving Cosmetic Retail and her Board Service to become the Phoenix Pride Program Manager. In 2019 she attended the Arizona Leadership Academy and ASU Lodestar obtaining her Non-Profit Management Certification. \nBecause of her experience in the Corporate Sector and her lived experience as a Bi-Racial trans woman\, Eva created the Phoenix Pride Diversity and Inclusion Training\, presented to local and national corporations agencies and entities to create lasting inclusive workplace policies and settings allowing all employees to truly thrive. Eva also serves the local organization The Imperial Court of Arizona as a volunteer and member and in 2021 Eva was sworn in as Council Member to the Greater Phoenix Ryan White HIV Services Planning Council and was announced as the organization’s first Director of Programs. \n  \nLanden Smith (he/him/his) Development Manager – Phoenix PRIDE\nLanden originally from Toledo\, Ohio has been a resident of Phoenix since 2006. After coming out in 2007 he was able to attend his first pride festival here in Phoenix and has been nearly every year since. With a background in clothing retail management for nearly 15 years\, Landen began working with Phoenix Pride in 2017 after winning the title of Mister Phoenix Pride. Later that year he joined the Phoenix Pride Board of Directors. In his four years on the board\, he served as Audit Committee Chair\, Director at Large\, and later as the President before taking the leap from board service to staff. Additionally\, he is the Co-Director for the Phoenix Pride Pageantry System. Landen also previously served as Emperor XIV and Vice-President of local community non-profit\, the Imperial Court of Arizona. \nOutside of the office you can catch Landen dancing on stages across the valley entertaining as “Kristofer Inez Onyx” and traveling throughout the country whenever he has the opportunity. \n  \nMonique Vallery is the Director of Development at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF). She joined SAAF after serving as the Chief Operations Officer and Creative Director at Fourth Avenue Merchants Association. Monique also serves as Board President for Homicide Survivors\, Inc. Her commitment to Homicide Survivors and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) comes from a very passionate place\, due to a personal loss her family experienced and the kindness they received from the community. She has spent the last 18 years in Tucson developing and supporting both corporate and nonprofit events as well as fundraising. Her strongest value is believing that our community is about building and maintaining relationships. \n
